One idea that some people use to attempt to make money on the web is the generation of lots of little micro sites that target very niche topics but can generate a small amount of income from residual income from advertising.
People talk about sites that can generate between 1 and 5 dollars a day. These people then set out to set up as many of these sites as possible and hope to make a living.
The type of websites created are very static, no forums or user interaction as the would mean the admin work would be too high and stop them from creating as many sites as possible. They are usually of order 5 to 30 pages in size and to be honest I can not ever remember encountering one while I have been surfing the web. I guess I am not in any niches they target.
It is a fascinating idea and certainly appeals to people (like myself) who like the idea of residual/passive income. I also like the idea of creating sites that are focused on single topics, unlike this blog, but the downfall of the idea for me is the topics you have to target are probably not the most interesting for me so it limits that appeal for me to actually attempt this method of making money.
I have wondered if you could use something like googlesites to host all your sites and thus avoid any costs of attempting to do this.
