The past week or so I have spend a few hours reading up on marketing websites. Basically I go to google and typing in various questions and read some of the websites it presents. It seem internet marketing is quite a cut throat place with each site trying to out market the other. For some reason it brings a little smile to my face.
Much of it seems to be about expanding your internet presence to get people following links to you sites. Basically be active in blogs/twitter/forums and over time build a collection of places linking back to your site. The seems to be some shady ways to do this but they are not something I will consider.
The other side to it seems to be about getting the content on your site as focused as possible so search engines can rate your site highly when it comes to that subject matter. When I think about this blog and how I often change subjects mid post I can see it is doomed to be not very popular when it comes to search engines. I don't mind as it is a personal blog and should cover many topics.
On the content side of things many places recommend short articles (300 - 500 words) but then other talk about longer pillar posts as being the most important. I suspect this is topic/writer dependant more than anything.
I could probably have written this post before doing any research as most of it is pretty obvious, I guess I was hopping for some other secrets but much like other things it seem to be you have to put the effort in.
Part of me want to start a new focussed blog/content site and see if I can take what I have read and actually make a success of a content based website. But for now I am resisting. When the next project is done it will be time to experiment with some of these ideas.
