Yep I am back to thinking about it again. Until this week I was considering marketing as a tool to promote a web app I have written. Sort of something to do as part of the release process. I still think of it as that but I realised and also need a second stage of marketing.
Let me explain my reasoning. Getting the word out about your latest creation is not easy if no one is listening. So I need people to listen. On the Internet this means getting people to read your blog and follow you on twitter.
To do this I need to do two things, write posts and get people to the site. In this I consider marketing as getting people to read the content I have already written.
Google provides most of my traffic to my blog. I consider most of this to be fly by traffic. People using google are looking for an answer to something, Read the post and are gone. OK that is not all of the google traffic but you get the idea.
Looking at google this way made me realise I need to have an attempt at getting traffic from other sources. I have to go out there and get some links back to my sites so people can find it via some route that is not google.
To this end I need to get a little bit active on posting comments on blogs and forums. Not spam as I dislike spam to say the least. Just if I know the answer, can offer some advice or be useful in someway I should default to taking a few minutes to do so. My default in the past has been to not bother and that is a little odd considering I love helping people out.
OK this may not be the most productive way to gain visitors but it is a strategy and one recommended by various popular bloggers.
