I think it was Einstein that said stupid is repeating the same thing time and time again and expecting the results to be different.
That is the theme of this post, If you take a look at the stats I have published for my various sites one thing you could take away from it is doing small games/app with very low production values results in a very low number of visitors. My goal of the year is to increase visitor count to 2000 a month. If I keep producing these 40hr app I may get there just but it will be close.
For instance Monkey Bounce gets less visitors a month than a the top article on this site. I don’t recall how long it took to write that article (it includes code) but it is less than a few hours. Monkey Bounce took a lot more than that. In terms of getting visitors it does not make sense to invest in small games/app. Time would be better spent creating content.
However in some ways Monkey Bounce was not meant to be successful it was meant to help drive the development my little CoffeeScript gaming library. By that development metric Monkey Bounce was successful. Gaming libraries are never finished so I could continue creating small games to develop it further for quite a while.
Did I say fun yet?. The stuff I do in my spare time has to be fun or fascinating in some way to me personally. Making stuff is fun (I am addicted to coding and figuring stuff out) but it is stupid to continue to make small games and app as the results are very limited in terms of achieving my goals. It is fun but not driving me towards my goals.
I have to change what I am doing while keeping the fun. That is mix things up a little.
One thing I plan to do is experiment with content creation. My previous posts deal with this a little bit. I am going to try creating websites about almost random topics and see how that goes. Don’t worry I will continue to blog here.
My voyaging mind blog will focus more on games and technology and this blog will focus on my own goals and moving towards them. Here you will get the grim and dirty stats, voyaging mind you will hear about game design issues. Oh yes I am going to write a game. Just this time it won’t be a quick hack I am going to design something that is a little bit more taxing in terms of tame and design. It should be fun.
I am still sticking to small iterations, no iteration of a website or game should take 40hrs as I believe that helps to keep me motivated.
That is the currently plan but remember only stupid people don’t change their plans when faced with the reality of hard data. Thanks Einstein for giving me guidance!
