With all this public thinking about building niche sites I should say I am probably not going to announce them here as I build them I will talk about them but will probably not mention the topics the niche sites are covering.
It is not a big deal and it just does not really seem like the sort of information I want to release. This gives me the freedom to be a bit business orientated about it, in the sense I can pick boring topics without worry that I will have to report the topic on my blog. If I decided to report each website topic here it would affect my choice of topic to what I think is cool, rather than basing it on cold logic.
As I mentioned before I am not going to buy domain names. This may put me at a disadvantage to others. I am working on the naive theory that good quality content will win out.
My old blog still generates about a 1000 uniques a month and it is hosted at wordpress.com (I don’t include it in the stats I publish as I consider it a dead blog and the target of 2000 visitors a month is meant to be from my work of roughly this year). So I know creating sites that get of order 1000 visitors a month is possible using free hosting. The is not reason to suppose this is an upper limit :)
I am going to be quite relaxed approach to this project, I don’t want it to distract too much from my other projects. This means I expect it will be a gradual build up of sites rather than creating a new site every week.
Yes I have started building my first website on a slight obscure topic not at all related to computers. It is progressing gradually as the pace of a few hundred words every time I have a bit of "half" downtime.
